1. Basic Information

  • Chinese Name: 2,4 - 二氯苯氧乙酸 (2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid)
  • English Name: 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (abbreviated as 2,4-D)
  • Chemical Formula: C₈H₆Cl₂O₃
  • Molecular Weight: 221.04
  • CAS Registry Number: 94-75-7

2. Physicochemical Properties

  • Appearance: Pure product is a white crystalline solid.
  • Melting Point: 141℃
  • Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and benzene. Its salts (e.g., sodium salt, amine salt) are highly soluble in water.

3. Toxicity

Low toxicity to humans and animals, with a favorable safety profile for non-target organisms when used as directed.

4. Mechanism of Action

2,4-D exhibits activity similar to plant growth hormones and can be translocated within plants:

  • At low concentrations, it promotes plant growth;
  • At high concentrations, it inhibits growth—an effect that is more pronounced in dicotyledonous plants.

It disrupts the hormonal balance in plants, impairs nucleic acid and protein metabolism, and causes symptoms such as stem and leaf twisting, thickening of stem bases, and swelling/cracking in weeds. These disruptions eventually stop weed growth and lead to death.

5. Formulations

Commercial 2,4-D products are mostly soluble salts or esters to improve solubility and efficacy, including:

  • Active forms: 2,4-D sodium salt, 2,4-D butyl ester, etc.
  • Common formulations: Soluble powder (SP), aqueous solution (AS), emulsifiable concentrate (EC), etc.

6. Applications

6.1 As a Plant Growth Regulator

At low concentrations (1–30 ppm), it functions as a plant auxin to:

  • Stimulate crop growth;
  • Prevent flower and fruit drop;
  • Promote fruit enlargement and the formation of seedless fruits;
  • Accelerate ripening.

Suitable crops: Tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, zucchini, citrus, etc.
Example usage: For tomatoes, spray, daub, or dip flower clusters with a 5–10 mg/L 2,4-D aqueous solution to prevent flower and fruit abscission.

6.2 As a Herbicide

At high concentrations (above 500 ppm), it is used for foliar application to control:

  • Broad-leaved weeds (e.g., Chenopodium albumAmaranthus tricolor) and germinating grassy weeds in crop fields such as wheat, rice, corn, and sugarcane;
  • It can also be used for pre-emergence soil treatment in corn fields to control various monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds.

7. Packaging & Storage

7.1 Packaging

  • Adopts a two-layer packaging design:
    • Inner layer: Plastic film bag (to prevent moisture and leakage);
    • Outer layer: Fiber drum (for protection during transportation).
  • Standard net weight: 25 ± 0.2 kg per drum; customized packaging is available upon customer request.

7.2 Storage

  • Store in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry place; keep tightly sealed.
  • Shelf life: 3 years under proper storage conditions.
