1. Basic Information

Brand & Model

DOWSIL™ 8590

Packaging Specification

200 kg/blue iron drum. The large - capacity packaging is designed for large - scale production enterprises, which can reduce the frequency of packaging replacement and logistics costs, and meet the continuous supply demand of mass production scenarios such as architectural coatings and inks.

Main Component

The core component is organosilicon compounds (with polydimethylsiloxane as the basic active substance), combined with special emulsifiers and stabilizers to form an emulsion structure compatible with water - based systems. The organosilicon component has the characteristic of low surface tension, which can quickly penetrate the foam film and destroy its stability, and is the key to achieving efficient defoaming.

2. Product Characteristics

Efficient Elimination of Micro - Foam in Water - Based Systems

For fine foam in water - based paints, inks and coatings (such as micro - bubbles generated by mechanical shearing during roller coating), DOWSIL™ 8590 can quickly diffuse and break the bubbles, avoiding defects such as pinholes and shrinkage cavities caused by residual foam in the coating. In styrene - acrylic latex paint, it can eliminate air bubbles involved in the stirring process; in water - based flexographic inks, it can inhibit foam accumulation during high - speed printing, ensuring the clarity of printed patterns.

Excellent Applicability in Roller Coating Scenarios

It is especially suitable for roller coating processes (such as the construction of architectural wall coatings), and can solve the problem of micro - foam generated by the friction between the coating and air when the roller rotates. Its unique formula can form a uniform defoaming protective layer on the coating surface, prevent foam accumulation at the roller marks, and ensure that the wall is smooth after painting, improving the decorative effect.

Wide Compatibility with Water - Based Systems

It is compatible with a variety of water - based resin systems, including:

  • Styrene - acrylic emulsion (commonly used in architectural coatings)
  • Acrylic resin (water - based ink, overprint varnish)
  • Acrylic - polyurethane composite system (wood coatings)
  • Acrylic - epoxy hybrid system (metal protective coatings)
    After addition, it does not affect the viscosity, drying speed and film - forming performance of the system, nor does it cause the decrease of coating gloss or adhesion.

Stable Chemical Tolerance

It is stable in the pH range (5 - 10) and temperature (5 - 40℃) of conventional water - based systems, and is resistant to water dilution and interference from common additives (such as dispersants and film - forming aids). Even when constructed in high - humidity environments, it can still maintain the defoaming effect, adapting to the architectural coating needs of different climate zones.

3. Application Fields

Architectural Wall Coatings

  • Styrene - acrylic latex paint: When used for interior and exterior wall painting, it eliminates the stirring foam during production and the micro - foam during roller coating construction, avoiding defects such as "fish eyes" and "air holes" on the wall, and improving the flatness and weather resistance of the coating.
  • Water - based acrylic overprint varnish: In the wall glazing process, it inhibits the foam when the varnish forms a film, ensures the gloss uniformity of the transparent coating, and enhances the stain resistance of the wall.

Water - Based Inks

  • Water - based flexographic ink: Suitable for packaging printing (such as cartons, labels), it eliminates the foam generated by the ink when the printing roller runs at high speed, prevents the deformation of printing dots and color distortion, and improves the quality of printed matter.

Wood and Metal Protective Coatings

  • Acrylic polyurethane latex paint (for wood): In the painting of furniture and floors, it eliminates the foam during spraying or roller coating, ensures the fullness of the paint film, and does not affect the natural appearance of wood texture.
  • Acrylic - epoxy hybrid metal protective coating: Used for anti - corrosion coating of steel structures, auto parts, etc., it controls the foam during coating construction, avoids pinholes in the coating leading to rust penetration, and enhances the protective performance.

4. Usage Methods

Addition Timing

  • Production stage: Add in the later stage of grinding or paint mixing of water - based systems (such as latex paint, ink) to prevent foam generation;
  • Construction stage: If foam is found in the coating or ink, it can be added before construction and stirred evenly, and it is recommended to use it up within 8 hours.

Addition Amount

The recommended addition amount is 0.1% - 0.5% of the total mass of the system, and the specific amount needs to be adjusted according to the severity of the foam:

  • Low foam scenarios (such as static mixing): 0.1% - 0.2%;
  • High foam scenarios (such as high - speed stirring, roller coating): 0.3% - 0.5%.
    It is recommended to conduct a small test before use to test the defoaming effect and coating performance (such as leveling, adhesion) under different addition amounts to determine the optimal dosage.

Mixing Method

  • Direct addition: Slowly add DOWSIL™ 8590 to the stirring water - based system (rotation speed is recommended to be 500 - 1000 rpm), and continue stirring for 10 - 15 minutes until completely dispersed;
  • Dilution addition: If the system viscosity is high, the defoamer can be diluted with deionized water at a ratio of 1:1 - 1:5 before addition to avoid local high concentration causing coating shrinkage.

5. Storage Conditions

Environmental Requirements

  • Store in a cool and dry place at 5 - 30℃, avoiding direct sunlight or high temperature (exceeding 40℃ may cause emulsion delamination);
  • Prevent freezing in winter (freezing point is about - 5℃). If the product is frozen, it needs to be fully stirred and tested for performance after thawing. If delamination occurs, it cannot be used.

Sealing and Shelf Life

  • When unopened, the blue iron drum should be kept sealed to prevent water evaporation or impurity intrusion;
  • It is recommended to use it up within 3 months after opening, and the drum lid should be tightened after each use to avoid deterioration of the emulsion due to contact with air.
    Under compliance with storage conditions, the shelf life is 12 months (subject to the product label).

6. Safety and Operation

  • Avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. It is recommended to wear gloves and goggles during operation;
  • If accidentally contacted, rinse immediately with clean water and seek medical attention;
  • Keep away from fire sources during storage and use to prevent safety hazards caused by the volatilization of organic solvents (the product contains a small amount of cosolvents).
