  • Basic Information:

    • Chinese Name: 正癸酸
    • English Name: Capric Acid (also known as Decanoic Acid)
    • CAS Number: 334-48-5
    • Molecular Formula: C₁₀H₂₀O₂
    • Molecular Weight: 172.26
  • Physical Properties:

    • Appearance: White crystalline solid.
    • Density: 0.893 g/mL at 25°C.
    • Melting Point: 27-32°C.
    • Boiling Point: 268-270°C.
    • Flash Point: 121.8±11.9°C.
    • Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and most organic solvents.
  • Chemical Properties: It has stable chemical properties and is incompatible with bases, reducing agents, and oxidizing agents. It exhibits typical carboxylic acid reactions, such as reacting with bases to form caprates, reacting with alcohols to form esters, and undergoing reduction reactions to form decanol.

  • Sources: It exists in small amounts in cow's milk and goat's milk, and has a relatively high content in tropical oils such as coconut oil (capric acid content is about 8%) and palm kernel oil (capric acid content is about 9%). It is also a by-product of lauric acid production through the hydrolysis of laurel oil, coconut oil, or litsea cubeba oil.

  • Applications: It is mainly used to produce capric acid ester products, whose esters are used as fragrances, humectants, plasticizers, and food additives. It can also be used as essence, fragrance, food additive, plasticizer, rust inhibitor, polymer modifier, etc., and has important applications in multiple fields such as chemical industry, medicine, daily chemicals, and metal processing.

  • Storage Conditions: Packaged in aluminum drums, stored in a cool, ventilated, and dry place, and kept away from fire sources and oxidizing agents.
