Application Fields
Pharmaceutical Field: Propionic acid is an antiseptic and disinfectant. It has a weak inhibitory effect on fungal growth both in vivo and in vitro, and can be used for the treatment of skin fungi. In pharmaceutical production, it serves as a bacteriostatic agent, pH regulator and cosolvent.
Food Field: Propionic acid can be used as a food additive for preservative purposes. It can effectively inhibit molds, aerobic spore-forming bacteria and Gram-negative bacilli, and is basically harmless to humans, so it is widely used in the preservation of grains and food.
Agricultural Field: Both propionic acid and its salts have good mold-proof and antiseptic effects on feed. They have the advantages of low dosage, safe use, and can also provide trace elements such as calcium, sodium and potassium. In addition, propionic acid can be used to manufacture herbicides.
Chemical Industry Field: Propionic acid can be used as an esterifying agent, solvent for nitrocellulose, plasticizer, chemical reagent and for the preparation of food flavors. It is also used in the production of pesticides (such as sodium dichloropropionate), cellulose esters, propionates and various propionic acid esters.
Safety Information
Toxicity: The LD50 is 5600 mg/kg (bw) (rat, oral); no ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) limit is specified.
Health Hazards: Propionic acid vapor can irritate the eyes and respiratory system; the liquid can burn the skin and eyes.
