Relative Density (water = 1): 0.902 (0.894–0.898 in some references)
Relative Vapor Density (air = 1): 3.04
Flash Point: -4°C (closed cup); 7.2°C (open cup)
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water; miscible with alcohols, ketones, ethers, chloroform, and most organic solvents.
Chemical Properties: As an ester, ethyl acetate exhibits typical ester reactions, such as hydrolysis, alcoholysis, ammonolysis, transesterification, and reduction. For example, it hydrolyzes with water to form acetic acid and ethanol under acidic or alkaline conditions.
Applications
Industrial Solvent: Widely used in coatings, adhesives, ethyl cellulose, artificial leather, oil 毡着色剂 (felt colorants), artificial fibers, and other products.
Adhesive Component: Used in the production of printing inks and artificial pearls.
Extraction Agent: Applied in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and organic acids; capable of extracting compounds like phosphorus, tungsten, arsenic, and cobalt from aqueous solutions.
Fragrance Raw Material: A key component in fruit flavorings (e.g., pineapple, banana, strawberry) and spices (e.g., whiskey, cream). It is also used in liquor blending and artificial fragrance synthesis.
Other Uses: Serves as a cleaning agent in the textile industry and an extractant for natural fragrances; acts as a fast-drying solvent for nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, and chloroprene rubber; used in environmental protection and pesticide residue analysis; and functions as a reagent for detecting bismuth, gold, iron, mercury, oxidants, platinum, etc.
Safety Information
Hazardous Characteristics: Flammable. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, and it can ignite or explode when exposed to open flames or high heat. It reacts violently with oxidants.
Toxicity: Low toxicity but irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory mucosa. Inhalation of high concentrations may irritate the throat, causing edema, and may lead to liver/kidney congestion or acute pulmonary edema. Ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Protective Measures: Ensure good ventilation in work areas. Operators should wear protective gear (gloves, goggles, etc.). Store in a cool, well-ventilated place away from fire sources, direct sunlight, oxidants, acids, and alkalis.
