1. Basic Information

  • Chinese Name: 氯苯甘醚;4 - 氯 -α-(羟基甲基) 苯甲醇
  • English Name: Chlorphenesin; 3-(4-Chlorophenoxy)-1,2-propanediol
  • INCI Name: CHLORPHENESIN
  • CAS Number: 104-29-0
  • Molecular FormulaC9H11ClO3
  • Molecular Weight: 202.64
  • Chemical Structure: Formed by the ether linkage between p-chlorophenol and glycerol, its molecule contains two hydroxyl groups (-OH) and one chlorine substituent. This unique structure endows it with both preservative activity and low irritation.

2. Physicochemical Properties

  • Appearance: White to off-white crystalline powder, odorless or with a slight characteristic smell, free of visible impurities.
  • Solubility: Easily soluble in ethanol, propylene glycol, glycerin, and most polar organic solvents; moderately soluble in water (approximately 10g/L at 25℃). Solubility can be enhanced by heating (≤60℃) or combining with humectants. It disperses well in aqueous or water-oil mixed cosmetic systems without precipitation or stratification.
  • Stability: Exhibits excellent chemical stability within a pH range of 4.0–8.0 (covering most cosmetic systems), withstands temperatures up to 80℃, and is resistant to light and oxidation. It remains stable during long-term storage (when sealed and protected from light) without discoloration or decomposition. Avoid contact with strongly alkaline substances (pH > 9.0) or strong reducing agents.
  • Safety: Extremely low irritation. Certified by the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), it causes no skin or mucosal sensitization within the recommended dosage. Passes acute oral toxicity and skin irritation tests, meeting safety standards for infant cosmetics (China GB 30616, EU EC No 1223/2009).

4. Mechanism of Action & Core Efficacy

Chlorphenesin achieves preservation by inhibiting microbial cell metabolism while offering mild soothing and repairing effects:

  1. Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Activity: Targets and inhibits the cell wall synthesis and enzyme activity of fungi (e.g., Candida albicans) and bacteria (e.g., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus), especially effective against common molds and yeasts in cosmetics. It can be used as a primary preservative alone or combined with phenoxyethanol and 1,2-hexanediol to expand the antibacterial spectrum and reduce the dosage of single preservatives.
  2. Low-Irritation Advantage: Compared to traditional preservatives (e.g., parabens, methylisothiazolinone, MIT), its molecular structure penetrates the skin's stratum corneum less readily, minimizing damage to the skin barrier. Ideal for sensitive skin, maternity, and infant care products, it resolves the core conflict between preservation and gentleness.
  3. Moisturizing and Repairing Support: The hydroxyl groups (-OH) in its molecule form hydrogen bonds with moisture in the stratum corneum, enhancing product moisturization. It also mildly suppresses the release of skin inflammatory factors (e.g., IL-8), relieving mild dryness and redness, and improving product comfort.

5. Application Fields

  • Cosmetics Industry: Primarily used in high-safety products, such as sensitive skin care items (repair creams, soothing serums), infant care products (baby lotions, diaper rash creams), facial masks, and eye care products (eye creams, eye masks). The recommended addition level is 0.3%–1.0%. Also applicable in color cosmetics (e.g., foundations, lip glosses) to prevent microbial contamination.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Used as an excipient in topical preparations, such as antifungal ointments and skin repair lotions, providing both preservation and auxiliary antibacterial effects. Complies with pharmaceutical-grade standards (USP, EP).
  • Personal Care Industry: Added to mouthwashes and oral sprays to inhibit oral pathogens (e.g., Streptococcus mutans) without irritating the oral mucosa.

6. Usage Recommendations

  • Addition Timing: In cosmetic production, add when the system cools down to below 50℃ and stir until fully dissolved. To improve solubility, pre-dissolve it in a small amount of propylene glycol (1:2 mass ratio) before adding to the system. Avoid high temperatures (>80℃) to prevent slight degradation.
  • Compatibility with Compounding Ingredients: Compatible with most cosmetic raw materials. It can be compounded with humectants (hyaluronic acid, ceramides), active ingredients (vitamin C derivatives, panthenol), and other preservatives (1,2-hexanediol, caprylohydroxamic acid) without compatibility issues. Avoid mixing with strong cationic surfactants (e.g., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), which may affect preservative activity.
  • Suitable pH Range: Recommended for use in systems with a pH of 4.5–7.5. Adjust the pH with citric acid or triethanolamine to maximize preservation efficacy and stability.

7. Packaging & Storage

  • Packaging: Double-layer sealed packaging is used, with an inner layer of food-grade polyethylene plastic bags (to isolate moisture) and an outer layer of aluminum foil bags or cardboard drums (to protect from light and moisture). Common specifications include 100g/bottle, 500g/bag, 1kg/bag, and 25kg/cardboard drums (lined with moisture-proof film). Custom pharmaceutical-grade small-batch packaging (10g/20g) is also available.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place (temperature ≤25℃, relative humidity ≤60%), away from light and heat sources. The shelf life is 24 months in an unopened state. Once opened, use promptly (preferably within 1 month), and reseal the remaining product to prevent moisture absorption and caking.
