Pharmaceutical Industry (Primary Use as an Excipient):

Glidant:​ Its primary function. Added in low concentrations (0.1%-0.5% w/w) to powder blends to significantly improve flow properties​ by reducing inter-particulate friction and adhesion, crucial for direct compression tablet manufacturing.

Thickening & Thixotropic Agent:​ In gels, creams, and liquid suspensions, it acts as a viscosity modifier. It forms a three-dimensional network that provides stability against settling and exhibits thixotropy​ (viscosity decreases under shear and recovers at rest).

Suspending Agent:​ Prevents the settling of insoluble particles in liquid formulations.

Anti-caking Agent:​ Prevents powder caking and clumping in capsules and dry powder inhalers.

Adsorbent:​ Can be used to adsorb liquid components onto a solid carrier in powder formulations (liquid-to-powder conversion).
