Zwitterionic Surfactant Intermediate:​ This is its largest and most important use. It reacts with sodium chloroacetate​ (or other quaternizing agents) to produce cocamidopropyl betaine. This betaine is a mild, high-foaming, viscosity-building, and excellently conditioning​ zwitterionic surfactant, serving as the core primary or key auxiliary surfactant​ in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, and hand soaps.

Hair Conditioner/Antistatic Agent:​ It can act directly as a cationic conditioner​ (in acidic formulations) in hair conditioners and treatments, providing softness, smoothness, and antistatic effects, improving dry combability.

Skin Conditioner/Emulsifier:​ Used as a co-emulsifier and conditioning ingredient in skin creams and lotions, providing a moisturizing feel.

Household & Industrial Cleaners:

Surfactant Component:​ Used in formulating mild hand dishwashing liquids, hard surface cleaners, and glass cleaners, providing wetting, emulsification, cleaning, and thickening.
