Initiators & Polymer Industry (Core Application):

Free-Radical Initiators:​ Its peroxides (e.g., tert-butyl perpivalate) and peroxyesters are important medium-temperature (~100°C) free-radical polymerization initiators. Widely used in the synthesis of acrylic resins, unsaturated polyesters, styrenic polymers (e.g., ABS, PS), and in the high-pressure polymerization of polyethylene (LDPE). They decompose smoothly, offering moderate activity and good safety.

Polymer Modifier/Chain Transfer Agent:​ Its derivatives can be used as chain transfer agents to control molecular weight.

Pharmaceutical Industry:

Prodrugs/Protecting Groups:​ Leveraging its high steric bulk and slow enzymatic hydrolysis in vivo, hydroxyl or amino groups in drug molecules are often converted to pivalate esters or pivalamides to serve as prodrugs.
