English Name: Alpha - Olefin Sulfonate, abbreviated as AOS
Technical Indicators
Appearance: AOS - 92 is a white or light yellow powder, and AOS - 35 is a light yellow transparent liquid.
Active Substance Content: AOS - 92 is 92% or more, and AOS - 35 is 35.0% or more.
Free Oil: For AOS - 92, it is at most 3.0%; for AOS - 35, it is at most 1.5%.
Inorganic Salts: For AOS - 92, taking Na₂SO₄ as the standard, it is at most 5.0%; for AOS - 35, it is at most 1.5%.
pH Value: The pH value of a 1% aqueous solution is 9.5 - 11.5.
Performance Characteristics
High Surface Activity: It has excellent surface activity, and AOS with C14 and C16 carbon numbers has good solubility. It can significantly reduce the surface tension of water, and its wetting force is between LAS and AES, which is beneficial to the penetration and spreading of the solution on the surface of the object.
Good Foaming Property: It has good foaming power, and the foam is rich and stable, which can be suppressed by soap. In some products that require rich foam, such as shampoos and bubble baths, it can play a good role.
Strong Hard - Water Resistance: It has good calcium soap dispersion and anti - hard water performance, and can maintain good washing performance in hard water, which is suitable for use in areas with high water hardness.
Excellent Detergency: It has good detergency for sebum dirt, oily and powdery dirt. Its detergency is better than AES with EO = 3 and LAS, and it can effectively remove various dirt.
Good Biodegradability: Its biodegradability is better than AES and LAS, which is in line with the current requirements of green chemistry, and is conducive to reducing environmental pollution and has a lower impact on the ecological environment.
Mild and Low - Toxicity: It has little skin irritation, is mild to the skin, and is suitable for use in personal care products, especially in mild detergents and baby products.
Production Process
The production of AOS mainly includes three steps, namely the reaction of olefin and SO₃, the addition reaction of oleanolic alcohol, and the neutralization reaction. First, the olefin and SO₃ are mixed in a certain proportion and heated to the reaction temperature, and a catalyst is added to speed up the reaction. Then, oleanolic alcohol is slowly dropped into the reaction mixture, and the appropriate reaction temperature and pH value are maintained. After the reaction is completed, the product is obtained by distillation. Finally, the product is neutralized with alkaline substances such as sodium hydroxide to obtain the final alpha - olefin sulfonate product.
Applications
Detergents and Cosmetics: It is the preferred main raw material for washing powder, complex soap, dishwashing detergent, and phosphorus - free detergent. It is also widely used in cleaning cosmetics such as shampoo, shower gel, and facial cleanser.
Industrial Fields: It can be used in the textile printing and dyeing industry, petrochemical industry, and industrial hard - surface cleaning. It can also be used as a concrete density improver, a foaming agent for fire - fighting, a pesticide emulsifier, and a wetting agent.
Packaging and Storage
Packaging: AOS - 92 is generally packed in 25 - kg kraft paper bags, and AOS - 35 is usually packed in 200 - kg plastic drums.
Storage: It should be stored in a sealed manner at room temperature, and the shelf life is usually two years.
