Synthetic Detergents (Traditional Major Use, Now Restricted):

High-Performance Builder: Was the core component of laundry powders and dishwashing detergents, providing sequestration, dispersion, emulsification, and buffering. Due to eutrophication concerns, its use in many household detergents is phased out or banned, replaced by phosphate-free alternatives (e.g., zeolites). It remains in some industrial/institutional cleaners.

Industrial Water Treatment:

Corrosion & Scale Inhibitor: Used in industrial cooling water and boiler water systems as an effective corrosion and scale inhibitor, preventing hard scale (e.g., CaCO₃, CaSO₄) via sequestration and crystal distortion.

Food Industry (Food Grade):

Improving Agent, Moisture Retainer, Emulsifier: Widely used in processed meats​ (ham, sausages, surimi), canned seafood, and dairy products​ to improve water-holding capacity, texture, prevent fat oxidation, and enhance emulsion stability. A key food additive (E451).

Ceramics & Refractories:

Powerful Deflocculant & Water Reducer: Acts as a highly effective deflocculant​ in ceramic bodies and glazes, significantly reducing slurry viscosity, improving fluidity and solid content, saving energy.

Petroleum Drilling:

Mud Dispersant: Used to control the rheology of drilling muds.
