1. Basic Information

  • Brand and Model: BYK-349, a polyether-modified siloxane-based organosilicon surfactant developed by BYK (Germany), specifically designed for water-based coatings, adhesives, and 养护 products.
  • Packaging Specifications: 25 kg/blue iron drum and 200 kg/blue iron drum, suitable for small-batch and large-scale industrial procurement needs.
  • Core Component: Polyether-modified siloxane, achieving an efficient balance between surface tension regulation and substrate wetting through molecular structure optimization.

2. Core Performance

  1. Strong Reduction of Surface Tension:
It can reduce the surface tension in water-based systems to 20 - 25 mN/m (conventional water-based systems are about 35 - 40 mN/m), promoting uniform spreading of coatings/adhesives on low-surface-energy substrates (such as PE, PP plastics, metal coatings) and effectively eliminating surface defects like craters and fisheyes.
  2. Broad-Spectrum Substrate Wettability:
It has significant wetting effects on both polar and non-polar substrates such as metals (aluminum alloy, galvanized sheet), plastics (ABS, PVC), wood, and concrete. Especially, it enhances the adhesion ability of polyurethane systems and high-gloss coatings to complex surfaces.
  3. Zero Smoothness Characteristic:
Different from traditional silicone-based leveling agents, it does not change the surface friction coefficient of the coating. It is suitable for scenarios where the original touch needs to be retained (such as anti-slip floors for automotive interiors, matte paint surfaces of furniture) or industrial component coatings that require subsequent processes like welding and bonding.
  4. Compatibility with Auxiliary-Free Systems:
Specially designed for water-based formulations without other surface auxiliaries, it avoids compatibility issues with additives such as defoamers and thickeners. It can still exert a stable leveling effect in minimalist systems, meeting the performance requirements of demanding scenarios such as automotive coatings.

3. Application Fields

  • High-End Water-Based Coatings:
    • Automotive Coatings: Original factory paints, interior component coatings (such as coatings for instrument panels, door panels), improving the wetting of coatings to PP plastic substrates, enhancing the weather resistance and adhesion of coatings, while meeting the low friction coefficient requirements of interior components.
    • High-Gloss Systems: Piano paints, furniture high-gloss varnishes, ensuring uniform coating leveling, increasing the glossiness to above 90° (tested with a 60° gloss meter), and avoiding subsequent sanding difficulties caused by smoothness.
    • Polyurethane Coatings: Water-based polyurethane floor paints, anti-corrosion coatings, enhancing the penetration and adhesion of coatings to concrete and metal substrates, and improving the anti-cracking performance of coatings.
  • Adhesives and Maintenance Products:
    • Water-Based Adhesives: PVC floor adhesives, wood splicing adhesives, improving the spreadability of adhesives on porous substrates (such as density boards, tiles), and increasing the bonding strength and water resistance.
    • Concrete Curing Agents: Reduce the surface tension of curing agents, promote their uniform film formation on the concrete surface, and improve curing efficiency and anti-seepage performance.

4. Usage Guide

  • Recommended Dosage:
0.1 - 0.5% based on the total formula. It is recommended to determine the optimal dosage through gradient tests (such as 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%), focusing on observing the balance between leveling speed and foam stability (a dosage of 0.2 - 0.3% is recommended for automotive coating scenarios).
  • Adding Method:
It can be added during the grinding stage or paint mixing stage. Dilute it 10 - 20 times with deionized water or a system-compatible solvent (such as propylene glycol butyl ether) and then add it slowly, stirring for 20 - 30 minutes until completely dispersed. Avoid high-shear stirring to prevent the failure of the additive.
  • Compatibility Tips:
It is compatible with water-based acrylic resins, polyurethane dispersions (PUD), and water-based epoxy systems. Avoid mixing with strongly cationic auxiliaries (such as quaternary ammonium salts) or high-concentration electrolyte solutions to prevent demulsification.

5. Storage and Compliance

  • Storage Conditions:
Store in a sealed manner in a cool and dry place at 5 - 35°C, with a shelf life of 12 months. If slight turbidity occurs in a low-temperature environment, heat to 25°C and stir evenly, which will not affect the performance.
  • Environmental Protection and Certification:
Free of APEO, with a VOC content of less than 10 g/L, compliant with EU REACH, US CARB 2 and other environmental regulations, and suitable for sensitive fields such as automotive interiors and food contact packaging.
