1. Basic Information

  • Brand and Model: BYK-345, produced by BYK (Germany), a company with high reputation and technical strength in the additive field.
  • Product Name: Leveling Agent
  • Packaging Specifications: There are two common specifications: 25 kg/blue iron drum and 200 kg/blue iron drum, which is convenient for customers with different dosage requirements to choose.
  • Composition: Polyether-modified siloxane, belonging to the category of silicone surfactants.

2. Product Performance

  • Strongly Reduce Surface Tension: BYK-345 has excellent ability to reduce surface tension. In water-based coating systems, it can make the coating spread more easily on the substrate surface, avoiding surface defects such as craters and orange peel, thereby forming a uniform and smooth coating. For printing inks and varnishes, it can make the ink transfer and adhere better during the printing process, improving the clarity of printed patterns and the gloss of varnishes.
  • Significantly Improve Substrate Wettability: It can significantly improve the wetting performance of water-based coatings, printing inks and varnishes on various substrates. Whether it is polar substrates such as metals and glass, or non-polar substrates such as plastics and rubber, it can enhance the adhesion between coatings or inks and substrates, ensuring that the coating adheres firmly to the substrate surface.
  • No Increase in Surface Smoothness: Different from some other leveling agents, BYK-345 does not additionally increase the surface smoothness of the coating when exerting leveling and wetting effects. This feature makes it suitable for some application scenarios where there are specific requirements for surface smoothness and it is not desired to change the surface touch due to the use of leveling agents, such as some packaging printing inks that require specific friction coefficients and water-based wall coatings that require specific texture.

3. Application Fields

  • Water-based Coatings: Widely used in water-based industrial coatings, water-based architectural coatings, water-based wood coatings, etc. In water-based industrial coatings, it helps the coating to level better, improving the protective performance and appearance quality of the coating on metal workpieces; in water-based architectural coatings, it can improve the wetting of the coating to the wall substrate, making the painted wall more smooth and uniform in color; in water-based wood coatings, it can enhance the adhesion of the coating to the wood surface, while avoiding affecting subsequent processes such as sanding due to excessive smoothness.
  • Printing Inks: Suitable for various water-based printing inks, such as gravure printing inks, flexographic printing inks, etc. It helps the ink to be evenly transferred to the substrate surface during the printing process, making the color of the printed pattern more vivid and the edges clearer, and can improve the adhesion between the ink and different substrates such as paper and plastic films, reducing ink flying and deinking.
  • Varnishes: In water-based varnish systems, BYK-345 can promote the uniform distribution of varnish on the coated surface, improve the gloss and transparency of the varnish, enhance the protection effect on the substrate, and ensure that the varnish layer does not have defects such as flow marks and craters.

4. Usage Instructions

  • Adding Method: It can be added during the grinding stage, paint mixing stage, etc. in the production process. In order to ensure its uniform dispersion in the system, it is recommended to add it slowly under stirring, and give sufficient stirring time to make the leveling agent fully dissolve and disperse into the coating, ink or varnish system.
  • Recommended Dosage: Generally, the dosage range based on the total formula is between 0.05% and 0.5%. However, the actual optimal dosage needs to be determined through a series of tests and experiments according to the specific formula composition, production process and requirements for the final product performance.

5. Precautions

  • Solvent Addition: Although BYK-345 is mainly used in water-based systems, in some cases, a small amount of organic solvent may need to be added to further optimize its performance or improve compatibility with other components in the system. When adding organic solvents, attention should be paid to their types, dosage and addition sequence to avoid negative impacts on product performance.
  • Storage Conditions: It should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated environment, avoiding direct sunlight and high temperatures. The recommended storage temperature is between 5°C and 35°C. Under suitable storage conditions, the product can maintain stable performance. Improper storage may affect its leveling, wetting and other effects.
